Nintendo has clarified that the Switch2 Edition of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will not include its previously released paid DLC, a detail that may have been obscured by numerous announcements surrounding the Switch2 reveal.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of six special Switch2 Editions, which are enhanced versions of existing Switch games. The other games receiving similar upgrades are Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime4: Beyond, and Pokémon Legends Z-A. These Switch2 Editions feature improved frame rates and resolutions, alongside a variety of game-specific features.

Each Switch2 Edition is available to purchase as a standalone digital or physical release. Additionally, Nintendo is offering a paid upgrade path for players who already own the original Switch version of the game. The company has stated, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase.” As a result, anyone looking to experience the full Breath of the Wild on Switch2 will need to purchase both the game and its DLC separately.

Nintendo is selling the Switch2 Editions at a premium price compared to the original Switch versions. Purchasing the Breath of the Wild Switch2 Edition and its DLC separately will cost approximately £85. This pricing has raised concerns among fans, particularly given that the game is eight years old. The cost of the Switch2 console itself, as well as other games and accessories, has also generated controversy. For example, Mario Kart World is priced at £75, and Nintendo is charging $10 USD for Switch2’s Welcome Tour tutorial game.

The pricing strategy has led to backlash from fans, with some expressing disappointment at the additional costs associated with the new console. Although the console looks promising and its two flagship games have received praise after early hands-on time, Nintendo faces the challenge of addressing the lingering controversy surrounding Switch2.
