Xiaomi is set to shake up the smartphone market by skipping the Xiaomi 16 series and launching the Xiaomi 17 series of flagship devices later this month, directly challenging Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup.

The Xiaomi 17 series will include three models: the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, all of which are expected to be among the first smartphones to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. This next-generation processor promises to deliver enhanced performance and capabilities, making the Xiaomi 17 series highly competitive in the premium smartphone segment.

According to Xiaomi President Lu Weibing, the launch of the Xiaomi 17 series marks a significant milestone in the company’s five-year strategy to establish a strong presence in the premium smartphone market. Weibing highlighted the substantial investments the company has made in research and development over the past five years and announced plans to double this investment in the next five years. “The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will be the company’s most powerful flagship to date,” Weibing stated, underscoring the device’s expected capabilities.

Rumors surrounding the Xiaomi 17 series suggest significant upgrades, particularly in terms of battery capacity. The standard Xiaomi 17 is rumored to feature a 7,000mAh battery, while the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is expected to house a 7,500mAh battery. The high-end model is also speculated to include a secondary display, further enhancing its premium features and functionality.

Weibing explained that the decision to bypass the “16” designation was made to align the new flagships with the anticipated iPhone 17 series, thereby positioning Xiaomi as a direct competitor in the high-end smartphone segment. The launch of the Xiaomi 17 series is expected to be a key moment in the escalating competition in the global smartphone market, with Xiaomi aiming to challenge Apple’s dominance with its advanced technology and premium offerings.
