Wireless Power Consortium Launches Qi2 25W Charging Standard

Wireless Power Consortium Launches Qi2 25W Charging Standard

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has officially launched its latest wireless charging standard, Qi2 25W, increasing the maximum power output to 25 watts, a nearly 70% increase over the previous Qi2 standard.

The new standard is a significant upgrade from the original Qi standard, which was limited to 7.5W. The Qi2 update had previously increased power to 15W and incorporated a magnetic attachment system based on Apple’s open-sourced MagSafe technology. The WPC states that the number of devices currently in the certification queue for the new 25W standard is “unprecedented.” The organization chose the name Qi2 25W for clarity, opting against its internal designation of Qi 2.2.

While the new Qi2 25W standard is being adopted by the wider industry, a regulatory listing spotted last month suggests Apple may be developing its own 45W MagSafe charger. If a future device like the iPhone 17 supports this faster 45W charging speed, it would not be achievable with Qi2 25W certified chargers and would likely require a new, proprietary Apple charger to reach its maximum rate.
