Windows Hello bug hits some after latest update

Windows Hello logins are being disrupted for some users following a recent Windows update, specifically Windows 11 Build 26100.3775, released on April 8th.

The issue affects users who reset their PC using the Settings > System > Recovery tool, chose to keep their local files, and then enabled features like System Guard Secure Launch or DRTM after applying the update. Windows Hello is a biometric authentication feature that allows users to log into their devices with face recognition or a PIN, providing a fast and secure login method. It was originally introduced with Windows 10 and has since been a key feature in making device logins more seamless and secure in Windows operating systems.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem, noting it affects both face unlock and PIN login options through Windows Hello. Although affected users are not fully locked out of their devices, as they can still access their systems using their regular Windows password, the issue can be frustrating. Once logged in, users can reconfigure Windows Hello by setting up a new face scan.

The issue is considered an “edge case” due to the specific sequence of conditions required for the bug to manifest, making it relatively uncommon. As a result, Microsoft is not expected to prioritize a fix unless the bug becomes more widespread among users. The update in question has caused inconvenience for those affected, but the workaround of using the Windows password to log in and then re-enabling Windows Hello mitigates the issue.
