WhatsApp to Introduce New Shorter Disappearing Message Timers

WhatsApp is developing new, shorter time limits for its disappearing messages feature, according to a report by WABetaInfo, enhancing user control over message retention and privacy.

The feature, initially launched in November 2020, currently offers users the option to have messages disappear after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. The new time limits under development are reportedly one-hour and 12-hour options. These timers were discovered in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.24.18, but are not yet available for testing, even for beta users.

The one-hour timer is intended for users who want messages to disappear quickly, particularly when sharing sensitive information. WABetaInfo suggests that WhatsApp may display a reminder to users selecting the one-hour timer, potentially alerting them to the possibility that recipients may not have time to read the messages before they disappear.

The 12-hour timer aims to provide a balance between convenience and privacy, allowing users and recipients more time to respond before messages are deleted. This option would be suitable for scenarios like event planning or coordinating short-term tasks.

When WhatsApp initially rolled out disappearing messages, users could only enable or disable the feature, with messages disappearing after seven days. The addition of 24-hour, 7-day, and 90-day options came later in a subsequent update. WABetaInfo’s report indicates that users will still have the option to turn disappearing messages off entirely.

The introduction of the new shorter timers signifies WhatsApp’s continued focus on user privacy and control over message retention. The development of these features highlights WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance its privacy options and cater to a wider range of user preferences regarding message lifespan.
