WhatsApp Testing Mute Feature for @everyone Mentions

WhatsApp is developing a new feature for its Android app that will allow users to mute ‘@everyone’ mentions in group chats, giving them greater control over notifications and reducing disruptions.

The in-development feature was discovered by feature tracker WABetaInfo in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1. According to the report, the Meta Platforms-owned instant messaging client may be preparing the tool for release in a future version of the application.

A screenshot provided by the feature tracker illustrates how the function will appear in the user interface. A new “Mute @everyone” option has been added within the notifications settings for group chats, positioned directly below the main mute toggle. The feature is disabled by default, meaning users must manually activate the toggle to suppress these specific notifications.

This mute capability is being developed as a direct response to the existing ‘mention everyone’ function, which allows any group participant to trigger a notification for every member of the group with a single message. The new mute option is being created to address concerns about the potential misuse of this alert system and to mitigate notification overload for users.

Once the feature is rolled out, users will be able to suppress notifications that are specifically triggered by ‘@everyone’ mentions, while still receiving all other group notifications as normal. Additionally, the settings will allow users to continue receiving notifications from ‘@everyone’ mentions even if the group chat itself is muted, providing a more personalized approach to managing alerts on WhatsApp for Android.

WABetaInfo reports that the mute everyone mentions feature is currently under development and is not yet available to any users, including beta testers registered through the Google Play Beta programme. The feature may become available for testing purposes in a future update of the app over the coming weeks.
