Waze Tests Traffic Light Indicators in Israel Maps

Waze is testing traffic light indicators on its navigation maps in Israel, a long-requested feature that brings it closer to rival Google Maps, which introduced traffic light support in 2022.

The testing, currently in its early stages, has strict display limits to prevent map clutter, showing a maximum of three traffic lights at a time during active navigation. This approach is designed to keep the interface focused for drivers. When the map is open without active navigation, the app displays all traffic lights near the user’s current location.

Waze confirmed in May that traffic light support is planned, although there are no details on expanding the test within Israel or to other countries. The display limits could adjust as development advances.

The fact that Google owns Waze opens up possibilities for using Google Maps’ existing traffic light data, which is already mapped in places like the United States. Building this from scratch would otherwise take more time.

Israel is serving as the initial test location for this feature, which addresses years of user requests. While Waze users outside the test await full availability, Google Maps is already providing this capability to its users.
