False Echo, a new 2D pixel-art cryptographic narrative adventure, has been announced for PC. The game, inspired by Papers, Please, places players aboard a World War II submarine, where they will manage communications using the Obscura machine.
The gameplay involves processing transmissions, adjusting rotors, connecting cables, and aligning signals to decipher information under the oppressive standards of the Oppressian Empire. Developer Retromagine stated, “Use the ECHO system to classify messages as TRUE or FALSE. Rules change every day. Orders contradict each other.”
Players will face challenges as they navigate a landscape of shifting truths and mistrust. Retromagine added that, “Every interaction carries risk. Transmissions keep coming. If you slow down, you fall behind. If you make mistakes, others notice. Being noticed is dangerous.” The game will feature multiple endings based on player decisions.
False Echo is currently in development for Steam, but no release window has been announced. Interested players can add the game to their wishlist on Steam.
