Turn Off Read Receipts on Android Devices

Read receipts in messaging apps can be intrusive, but disabling them on Android is straightforward. This feature is typically available in apps like Google Messages or Samsung Messages, which support Rich Communication Services (RCS).

Before proceeding, it’s essential to note that the availability of RCS and its associated features depends on the messaging app and mobile carrier. If the app or carrier doesn’t support RCS, the options to disable read receipts may not be visible.

To turn off read receipts, start by opening the default Messages app on the Android device. The next step involves accessing the main menu by tapping on the profile icon, usually located in the top-right corner of the screen. From the menu that appears, select the Messages settings option.

Within the settings, navigate to the RCS chats or Chat features section. Here, find the toggle switch labeled Send read receipts and tap it to turn it off. It’s worth noting that disabling this feature will also result in the loss of the ability to see read receipts from other people.

For situations where reading a message without sending a receipt is necessary just once, a useful tip is to turn on Airplane Mode before opening the message. After reading it, fully close the messaging app before turning Airplane Mode off again.

Disabling read receipts is a step toward managing digital well-being by removing the social pressure to respond to messages immediately. It allows users to read and process information at their own pace without feeling watched or obligated to engage right away.

This setting helps establish healthier communication boundaries, giving users the privacy to decide when and how they want to reply. Ultimately, managing features like read receipts empowers users to use technology more intentionally and mindfully, ensuring the messaging app serves their needs rather than the other way around.
