President Trump has ordered all federal agencies to immediately stop using Anthropic’s technology, following significant disagreements between the Department of Defense and the AI company.
The order includes a six-month phase-out period for agencies, such as the Department of War, to transition away from Anthropic products. This move comes after the US conducted a major air attack on Iran a few hours after the order, with The Wall Street Journal reporting that the attack was carried out with the assistance of Anthropic’s AI tools.
The US had previously utilized Anthropic’s AI for a major military operation in the capture of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. In response to the phase-out, the Department of Defense has reached agreements with xAI and OpenAI to integrate their models within the agency’s network.
It is expected to take several months to replace Anthropic’s Claude with other AI models. The transition reflects the ongoing efforts by the Department of Defense to adapt its technological infrastructure in light of the new directive.
