Threads tests importing X creator follows feature

Meta has begun testing a new Threads feature that enables users to follow the same creators they already follow on X (formerly known as Twitter), marking a significant step toward strengthening community ties across social platforms.

Meta confirmed to TechCrunch that the new feature is currently in the testing phase within Threads, its fast-growing social media app. “We’re currently testing a way for you to find and follow creators from other platforms on Threads, making it easier to connect with the people and conversations that matter to you,” Meta spokesperson Alec Booker explained in an emailed statement.

The move addresses a common challenge faced by both creators and users who have migrated from X to other platforms like Threads and Bluesky. Many creators who left X struggled to rebuild their large followings on new platforms, while users found it difficult to recreate the same communities they had nurtured on X over the years. With this feature, Meta aims to ease the transition for those establishing themselves on Threads by helping them reconnect with familiar creators and contacts.

The beta feature first came to light when it was discovered by Jane Manchun Wong, a security researcher and former Meta employee, who frequently uncovers unreleased or experimental social media features.

Some Threads mobile app users began noticing the new feature on Wednesday, as a pop-up notification appeared with the message: “Find popular creators from X.” Users who engage with the pop-up are directed to the beta feature, which guides them through the process of downloading their list of followed accounts from X and importing that list into Threads. This step-by-step approach is designed to help users quickly locate and follow their favorite personalities who are also active on Threads.

At this stage, the import feature appears to concentrate on “popular creators” rather than every individual a user may follow on X. The specific technical process by which Meta identifies and matches X creators to their Threads profiles remains unclear. Meta has not provided details on the underlying mechanism or whether the feature will expand to include a broader range of accounts in the future.
