A coalition named Utilize, comprising companies like Google, Tesla, and Verrus, has launched to advocate for changes in the electrical grid’s construction and management, aiming to enhance its efficiency.

The coalition, which includes HVAC giant Carrier, virtual power plant company Renew Home, distributed energy resource developer Sparkfund, and smart electrical panel startup Span, launched on Tuesday. Utilize argues that the current grid is underutilized as it is designed to handle brief high-demand bursts, resulting in significant unused capacity most of the time. The group advocates for the widespread adoption of existing technologies such as battery storage, demand response, and virtual power plants to better utilize this capacity. The coalition cited Texas as an example where increased battery storage helped the grid perform better during recent cold snaps.

The group consists of sell-side members, including Tesla, Span, Carrier, Sparkfund, and Renew Home, and buy-side members, Google and Verrus. Utilize noted that many regulators and politicians remain wary of these new technologies, preferring centralized fossil fuel power plants. The coalition plans to advocate for policies that encourage the adoption of these technologies.
