Switch 2: GameCube classics are getting a serious glow-up

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to give some of Nintendo’s classic games a high-resolution makeover, launching with GameCube titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and F-Zero GX. This announcement came during Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct presentation, making the console’s $449.99 price tag more appealing.

GameCube games will be available through the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscription’s Classic Game Library, now called “Nintendo Classics.” This feature, which already includes games from NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, will require the NSO Expansion Pack for GameCube games, similar to the Game Boy and Nintendo 64 collections.

Nintendo is sweetening the deal for long-time subscribers by prioritizing them for Switch 2 preorder invites, with certain requirements. The Expansion Pack will also allow players to access the Switch 2 editions of Zelda games Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, provided they own the original Switch versions.

Alongside The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and F-Zero GX, Soul Calibur II is also slated for release on the Switch 2. This version includes adult Link as a playable character.

Nintendo teased other upcoming re-releases, including Super Mario Strikers and Chibi-Robo!, where players control a small robot armed with a toothbrush. The company may also revive more obscure GameCube titles like Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem and Cubivore.

These games will be compatible with a new wireless recreation of the GameCube controller. While the original GameCube underperformed compared to the Wii and Switch, the Switch 2 aims to give these games a second chance.
