Sony Develops AI Frame Generation for PlayStation Consoles

Sony PlayStation has confirmed that machine learning-based frame generation is in development for future PlayStation platforms, potentially enhancing visual smoothness and performance, particularly on the PS5 Pro.

The technology operates by generating additional frames to increase perceived frame rates without requiring increased GPU power, using artificial intelligence to create new frames between rendered frames. PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny stated to Digital Foundry that this technology “should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”

Frame generation differs from traditional performance gains, which rely on more powerful hardware, by using AI to predict motion and generate intermediate frames. This allows games to achieve higher perceived frame rates, such as 60fps or 120fps, without rendering every frame natively. As a result, developers could achieve higher graphical fidelity while maintaining fluid performance.

Sony is already implementing AI in its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an upscaling technology for enhanced image clarity on the PS5 Pro. The introduction of frame generation could further enhance the console’s capabilities. Although not explicitly confirmed for the PS5 Pro, the console is considered the most probable candidate due to its enhanced GPU performance and existing AI-driven technologies.

Potential drawbacks of frame generation include the introduction of input latency, which could cause a delay between player actions and on-screen responses. Nevertheless, implementation could extend the PS5 Pro’s lifespan by enabling higher performance without requiring new hardware.

Cerny indicated no immediate release plans, suggesting the feature may not arrive until 2027 or later. Sony’s collaboration with AMD on “Project Amethyst” suggests a central role for AI-driven rendering in future PlayStation systems. As a result, frame generation may become a standard feature across the PlayStation ecosystem, potentially debuting fully in next-generation hardware like the PlayStation 6.
