A Scottish second-hand flea market yielded a rare find: a 360 development kit previously owned by Rockstar Games, complete with an early beta build of Grand Theft Auto 4.
The discovery, made by a collector named Jan, initially seemed like just a “Phat Xbox 360.” Upon closer inspection, he identified it by a Rockstar Games sticker and an attached device known as the ‘Sidecar.’ Jan purchased the kit for five pounds (approximately $6.50) and later realized its potential value, sharing its contents online.
Dataminers and tech experts are currently working to recover files from the development kit, which contains a partially wiped 2007 build. Although most files have been retrieved, some notable discoveries include early images of characters, weapons, vehicles, and maps. One fan expressed excitement, saying, “HOLY. S**t. Something big has dropped.” Games that appear in the build are notably different from the final retail version.
Jan attempted to sell the dev kit and received a £1,000 ($1,300) offer but faced issues listing it on eBay due to its software, leading him to consider private offers instead. Fans have found evidence of a cut ferry from an early trailer and an abandoned “zombie minigame.” Some players have been able to run executable files, revealing previously unseen cut-scenes.
As the community delves into the files, attention also turns to the forthcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, set for release on November 19. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, confirmed that marketing for the game will begin this summer. Speculation around the game’s price suggests it could be around $100, though this remains unverified.
Zelnick also addressed rumors suggesting GTA 6 would be a digital-only release, stating such claims are false. Recently, PlayStation gamers have been tricking friends by adding GTA 6 to their Recently Played list, adding to the game’s growing hype.
