Samsung has unveiled the Samsung Galaxy XR, a mixed-reality headset developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, marking a significant entry into the Android XR platform.
The Galaxy XR is a standalone device that enables users to access a wide range of Android applications from the Google Play Store, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, and Netflix, within an immersive spatial environment. Priced at $1,800, the headset is now available for pre-order in the United States and South Korea through Samsung’s official website and Samsung Experience Stores.
The device features a 4K micro-OLED screen with a 100-degree horizontal field of view, supporting both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) content. Its design is noted for being lighter and sleeker compared to some competing devices. The headset incorporates eye tracking, hand tracking, and multiple sensors, allowing for control without the need for additional hardware.
Samsung has also introduced optional accessories for the Galaxy XR, including a Galaxy XR Controller and an official travel case, both available at $250. Financing options are available to make the headset more accessible. Early purchasers will receive “The Explorer Pack”, a promotional bundle that includes access to various services throughout 2025, such as Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, YouTube TV, NBA League Pass, the game NFL Pro Era, Adobe’s Project Pulsar, Asteroid, and Calm.
The Galaxy XR is positioned as the foundation for future Android XR hardware, with plans for subsequent devices, including AI glasses and other products, underscoring the companies’ commitment to advancing the Android XR ecosystem.
