Samsung to Launch XR Headset by End 2025

Samsung is set to launch its first extended reality (XR) headset, codenamed Project Moohan, by the end of 2025, putting it in direct competition with Apple’s Vision Pro in the emerging XR market.

Project Moohan is anticipated to boast high-end specifications, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, a processor designed for virtual reality experiences. The headset is also expected to feature Micro OLED displays, hand- and eye-tracking capabilities, and an external battery pack, mirroring the design of the Apple Vision Pro.

A significant differentiator for Project Moohan lies in its operating system. It will be the first headset to utilize Android XR, Google’s mixed-reality platform launched in December. This integration may offer a distinct user experience compared to Apple’s Vision Pro, which has been praised for its UI.

The XR headset will also feature full integration of Google Gemini, Google’s multimodal AI model. This enables the AI assistant to see what the wearer sees and provide information, such as restaurant reviews or immersive Google Earth renderings, upon request.

The price of Project Moohan remains undisclosed. Given the premium components, it is expected to be expensive, but if Samsung can offer a lower price than Apple’s $3,500 Vision Pro, it could attract more buyers. Apple reportedly slowed down Vision Pro production in October due to weak demand, indicating price sensitivity in the market.

Samsung aims to make extended reality more accessible and practical. By offering similar hardware and a compelling platform at a potentially more affordable price, Samsung hopes to transform XR from a niche product into a mainstream technology.
