Roblox has introduced a real-time, AI-powered chat rephrasing feature to replace banned words with more respectful language, enhancing user experience and maintaining community standards.
The new system replaces the platform’s previous filter, which simply censored prohibited text with hash symbols. Roblox stated that the change aims to prevent conversations from becoming disrupted and hard to follow. The feature rephrases filtered text to remain close to the user’s original intent while maintaining civility.
For instance, the message “Hurry TF up!” will now appear as “Hurry up!” instead of “####.” The company notifies all users in a chat when a message has been rephrased. According to Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox, “Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate.”
Bhatia further explained that “This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil.” The rephrasing tool supports all languages available through Roblox’s automatic translation tools. Additionally, Roblox is upgrading its text-filtering system to detect leetspeak and other sophisticated attempts to bypass filters.
The company reported that these upgrades reduced false negatives when sharing or soliciting personal information by 20 times. This development follows Roblox’s introduction of mandatory facial verification for chat access, a measure implemented in response to lawsuits from the attorneys general of Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana regarding child safety risks on the platform.
The legal actions were prompted by reports of young users facing dangers such as grooming and explicit content on the platform. This move underscores Roblox’s efforts to enhance safety and civility within its community.
