Hideki Kamiya, director of Resident Evil: Requiem, has publicly condemned individuals leaking the game ahead of its release, stating they “deserve a thousand deaths” and should “be cursed to never be able to play games again.” The director’s comments follow a surge of unauthorized content circulating online, including gameplay videos and clips revealing the game’s finale. Capcom, the publisher, has identified these materials as originating from copies obtained “through illegal means” and has promised “firm action” against those responsible.
The leaked content has prompted a strong reaction from the development team. Kamiya specifically referenced past incidents, recalling that the final developments of Resident Evil 2 were also exposed in a weekly photo magazine. In a message posted to Twitter/X, Kamiya accused leakers of destroying the happiness of both fans and creators. He wrote, “For your own selfish satisfaction, you trample on the feelings of the users who were looking forward to the game, as well as the feelings of the creators who put all their effort into making it. It’s a despicable act that destroys the happiness of everyone.”
Capcom has characterized the posting of these videos as copyright infringement and “an act that offends other customers.” Despite these statements, the publisher indicated that its response may be limited to deleting the uploaded videos or issuing warnings to the uploaders. Resident Evil: Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27.
Despite the spoiler concerns, early impressions of the title have been positive. IGN reported on a hands-on experience totaling approximately four hours with Resident Evil: Requiem. The publication described the game as “the old mixed with the new,” noting a modern package that includes two protagonists described as “a lot” likable. IGN stated that the experience left the team “more excited for the series than I have been in recent memory.”
