Reddit has integrated Google’s Gemini AI into its “Reddit Answers” feature, enhancing its AI-powered conversational search tool with more accurate and human-like responses based on real Reddit discussions.
Reddit Answers, which has been in beta since December 2024 and is currently available in English on the web and iOS in the US, allows users to ask questions and receive AI-generated summaries based on Reddit posts and comments. The tool includes direct links to the original threads and communities, effectively serving as a TL;DR for Reddit curated by AI. With Gemini on board, Reddit Answers is expected to deliver more accurate, relevant, and conversational responses grounded in real Reddit posts.
The integration operates through Google’s Vertex AI platform as part of an ongoing partnership between Google Cloud and Reddit. Gemini processes vast data from over 100,000 active Reddit communities and summarizes conversations among approximately 400 million users. According to Reddit, this has improved the relevance of its search results and increased user engagement, with more users navigating directly to the Reddit homepage through Reddit Answers.
Matt Snelham, Reddit’s SVP of Infrastructure, emphasized that the integration brings “the same innovation that powers Google to our users.” Michael Clark, Google Cloud’s North America President, highlighted the synergy of combining vast datasets with advanced technology, stating that it underscores the potential of such collaborations for users seeking answers faster and navigating directly to relevant conversations.
However, not all Reddit users are pleased with the new Answers tab. Some have expressed dissatisfaction, describing it as “annoying,” “cluttered,” and “unnecessary,” and have requested options to remove or disable it. While Reddit’s AI push may make the platform more accessible to newcomers, the core community appears to value the raw, unfiltered experience that Reddit is known for.
