Reddit is considering implementing identity verification measures to combat the growing issue of bots on its platform, according to the company’s CEO, Steve Huffman.

The potential introduction of identity verification is aimed at addressing the rise in automated accounts and fake content, which negatively impacts user experience and platform integrity. Huffman mentioned that the company is exploring various verification approaches, including lightweight options such as Face ID or Touch ID, which require a human presence to prove that a person is present.

Other considerations include relying on third-party services that are decentralized or do not require specific identification. More stringent options, such as ID-checking services, are also being weighed. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian commented on X that while he did not expect Face ID requirements, action against bot-generated content is necessary. He expressed concerns about user acceptance of face-scanning verification.

Huffman emphasized the company’s intent to prioritize user anonymity while confirming human presence. He described the process as an evolution to find a balance between verification and anonymity. Bots have increasingly affected social media platforms, including Reddit, where they have been utilized for various activities, including secret experiments.
