Reddit is expanding its AI-powered search feature to five new languages, making it accessible to users in Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Italy, and enhancing the platform’s global reach.
The update allows users who have set French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese as their default language to utilize the AI search in a question-and-answer format. This functionality is powered by a Google AI model, which enables the feature to provide accurate and relevant results. The AI-powered search is part of Reddit Answers, a feature that was first introduced last year and operates alongside the platform’s traditional search function, providing users with a more comprehensive search experience.
The introduction of AI-powered search has been well-received, with Reddit CEO Steve Huffman reporting that the platform’s search has more than 70 million weekly users. Additionally, over 6 million people use Reddit Answers, demonstrating the feature’s popularity. During a quarterly earnings call, Huffman discussed plans to unify the search experience, indicating a commitment to improving the platform’s search capabilities. The move to expand AI-powered search to additional languages is likely a response to the growing trend of Q&A-style search interfaces, which have gained popularity since ChatGPT integrated web search capabilities. Other companies, including search engines like Google and Brave, as well as startups like Perplexity, have also launched similar chat-based features, highlighting the increasing importance of AI-powered search in the technology landscape.
