Qualcomm has made two significant announcements: the unveiling of its first Wi-Fi 8 chip and the formation of a coalition of over 50 companies to support a 2029 target for commercial 6G networks.

The developments signal a coordinated industry push to establish next-generation wireless infrastructure ahead of surging demand for artificial intelligence. The company’s new connectivity platform targets consumer device availability in 2026, while the 6G roadmap aims for interoperable systems by the end of the decade.

The FastConnect 8800 Mobile Connectivity System integrates Wi-Fi 8, Bluetooth 7.0, Ultra-Wideband, and Thread 1.5 on a single chip. Qualcomm stated the device uses a redesigned 4×4 Wi-Fi radio configuration for mobile hardware. The chip delivers peak download speeds of 11.6 gigabits per second.

Qualcomm said the FastConnect 8800 doubles the throughput of its previous Wi-Fi 7 platform. It also triples the gigabit range of prior hardware. Bluetooth data speeds reach 7.5 megabits per second through a new High Data Throughput mode.

The company expects devices equipped with the FastConnect 8800 to reach consumers in the second half of 2026.

CEO Cristiano Amon framed 6G as a foundational shift rather than an incremental upgrade. “6G transcends being merely the next phase in wireless evolution. It serves as the bedrock for an AI future,” Amon said in a company statement. He projected that AI will account for 30% of all cellular traffic by 2034.

Qualcomm is designing 6G around three pillars: connectivity, wide-area sensing, and high-performance compute. The architecture aims to serve AI agent traffic rather than primarily consumer devices. The company expects to finalize 6G standards and specifications by 2028.

Qualcomm plans pre-commercial demonstrations in 2028 leading to interoperable commercial systems in 2029. The coalition of partners includes Amazon, Cisco, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nokia, and Samsung. The group committed to a milestone-driven roadmap for a coordinated global rollout beginning in 2029.

Qualcomm provides wireless technology used in smartphones and other devices globally. The company operates across multiple technology sectors including semiconductor design and connectivity standards.
