Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation flagship mobile chipset, officially named the “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5,” poised to power the upcoming wave of premium Android smartphones, including the highly anticipated Galaxy S26 series.

The new processor is expected to be featured in several high-end devices, with Xiaomi already confirming its adoption. The Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max models will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and notably, Xiaomi is bypassing the “16” series designation to directly compete with Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup.

Qualcomm has addressed the unconventional naming scheme of its latest chipset, explaining that the progression from Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to Gen 2 to Gen 3, followed by Snapdragon 8 Elite (which effectively served as “Gen 4”), now culminates in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This approach is designed to better reflect significant product milestones in their development cycle and will be consistently applied across future Snapdragon platforms.

The announcement was made in anticipation of the Snapdragon Summit 2025, where Qualcomm is expected to reveal comprehensive details regarding the chipset’s performance enhancements and advanced features. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is rumored to be built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm process and will incorporate custom Oryon cores, promising substantial improvements in processing power and energy efficiency.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 succeeds the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which powered devices such as the Galaxy S25 series. The decision to jump to “Gen 5,” rather than a hypothetical “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2,” underscores Qualcomm’s emphasis on marking significant advancements in its processor technology.
