Qualcomm is doubling down on AI, acquiring the generative AI division of Hanoi-based VinAI, a research company founded by ex-DeepMind scientist Hung Bui. The deal, announced Monday for an undisclosed sum, highlights Qualcomm’s push into AI tooling.

VinAI, established in 2019, develops computer vision algorithms and language models, with a focus on AI-powered automotive applications. VinAI has approximately 200 employees across offices in Hanoi, the U.S., and Australia.

Qualcomm SVP of Engineering Jilei Hou stated the acquisition reinforces their commitment to AI research and development, strengthening their ability to deliver cutting-edge AI solutions across industries.

Backed by Vietnamese conglomerate VinGroup, VinAI develops in-cabin monitoring, security, and smart parking systems. CEO Hung Bui expects VinAI to contribute to Qualcomm’s product lines for smartphones, PCs, and vehicles.

Bui stated that their expertise in generative AI and machine learning will accelerate the development of innovative solutions. Bui will join Qualcomm after the acquisition closes.

This marks Qualcomm’s second acquisition this year, following its purchase of San Jose-based Edge Impulse, an AI and Internet of Things company, in early March. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon sees edge AI as a significant growth driver for the company.
