Pearl Abyss has apologized for inadvertently including AI-generated art in its open-world RPG, Crimson Desert, sparking player feedback and industry scrutiny on the use of artificial intelligence in game development.
The developer stated that it unintentionally left 2D visual props created with “experimental AI generative tools” in the game’s final release, which was launched on March 21, 2026. The use of AI-generated assets in Crimson Desert has prompted a disclosure on the game’s Steam page.
Following reports from the community, Pearl Abyss identified that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the final release. The company plans to conduct a “comprehensive audit of all in-game assets” and will replace affected content in future patches.
Pearl Abyss also stated that it would review its internal communication processes to ensure greater “transparency and consistency.” This move aims to address the issue and prevent similar problems in the future.
The issue faced by Pearl Abyss is not isolated, as other developers have encountered similar challenges. Sandfall Interactive had awards rescinded for using generative AI in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Embark Studios is also replacing AI-generated content in Arc Raiders following player feedback.
