OpenAI has unveiled two new AI reasoning models, o3 and o4-mini, that can integrate images into their reasoning process, marking a significant advancement in AI technology and further expanding the capabilities of its ChatGPT platform.

OpenAI is releasing two new AI reasoning models today: o3, described as its “most powerful reasoning model,” and o4-mini, a smaller and faster model that achieves remarkable performance for its size and cost. According to OpenAI, o3 is its most powerful reasoning model to date, while o4-mini offers a more streamlined and cost-effective alternative.

The company also highlights that o3 and o4-mini will be able to “think” with images, integrating them directly into their chain of thought. This development could be particularly useful when users present the models with visual data such as sketches or whiteboards. Furthermore, the models will be capable of adjusting images by zooming in or rotating them as part of their reasoning process, enhancing their ability to analyze and understand visual information.

In addition to their advanced reasoning capabilities, OpenAI’s new models will be able to utilize all ChatGPT tools, including web browsing and image generation. This integration will enable users to leverage a wide range of functionalities within the ChatGPT ecosystem. The new models and tools will be available today for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users in o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high. Users of o3-pro can expect access in the coming weeks.

As part of this update, OpenAI will be phasing out its previous models, o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high, from the ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team tiers. This move is likely aimed at streamlining the company’s offerings and focusing on the more advanced and capable models.

Today’s announcement follows OpenAI’s recent unveiling of its flagship GPT-4.1 AI model, the successor to GPT-4o, which was revealed on the previous Monday. This latest development underscores OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of AI capabilities and performance.
