OpenAI is set to offer a free one-year subscription to its ChatGPT Go plan to all users in India, including existing subscribers, as part of its expansion strategy in the country.
The promotion is scheduled to commence on November 4, 2025, coinciding with OpenAI’s DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru, where India-specific announcements will be made for local developers and enterprises. ChatGPT Go, launched in India in August, is OpenAI’s most affordable paid subscription, priced at less than $5 per month. The free offer is aimed at driving growth in India, which has become OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States.
Although the company has witnessed high app downloads in India, it has faced challenges in generating revenue from paid plans. To address this, current ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will receive the free 12-month plan in addition to their existing access. This initiative is part of OpenAI’s broader efforts to expand its presence in the country, which includes the recent opening of an office in New Delhi and the hiring of a local team.
The move is in line with competitive strategies being implemented in India. For instance, Perplexity has partnered with Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to 360 million Airtel subscribers, while Google has introduced a free one-year AI Pro plan for students in the country. These actions are designed to attract users in a market characterized by a large and youthful population.
