OpenAI is temporarily relaxing GPT-5.6 Sol usage limits after a surge in demand for the model over the past 48 hours. On Sunday, OpenAI confirmed that it is removing the five-hour usage restriction for Plus, Pro, and Business plans while resetting current usage for all users.
OpenAI product lead Tibo stated in a post on X, “The last 48 hours of Codex and ChatGPT Work have been intense. [We’re] temporarily removing the 5 hour usage limit restriction for all Plus, Business and Pro plans.” The changes mean users will no longer be forced to stop working upon exhausting the five-hour window.
Under normal circumstances, Codex and ChatGPT count local messages and cloud-based tasks against a shared usage limit. ChatGPT typically employs a rolling five-hour window, with weekly limits also applicable depending on the plan and model.
In addition to removing the restriction, OpenAI is enhancing GPT-5.6 Sol to make it more efficient, allowing it to consume less of the available usage. Tibo added, “[We are] rolling out changes that will make GPT-5.6 Sol more efficient across the board and that will be reflected in less usage being used so that it can take you further.”
Details on how OpenAI reduced the usage of GPT-5.6 Sol remain unclear, but it is likely due to lower token consumption. OpenAI also issued a one-time usage reset, providing users with additional capacity to utilize its flagship model for coding and agentic work, although GPT-5.6 Sol does not become completely unlimited.
