OpenAI is developing a feature called “Naughty Chats” for its ChatGPT platform, as revealed by code references in the latest application update, marking a potential shift in the company’s content policies.
The code strings found in ChatGPT version 1.2026.055 describe the setting as one that “lets ChatGPT use spicier, adult-themed language” and confirm it would be available only to users 18 and older. The feature is currently not activatable, indicating it remains in development. This development follows CEO Sam Altman’s comments in October 2025 regarding plans to relax restrictions on adult content. The feature aims to align ChatGPT with other AI platforms that permit more adult-themed language, some of which have been criticized for lacking sufficient guardrails.
The code confirms that age verification would be mandatory for access to the feature. OpenAI recently introduced an age-prediction tool that assesses factors such as account age, usage patterns, and stated age to verify a user’s adulthood. If a user is not verified as an adult, they will be moved to a “teen experience” and must send a selfie for verification through a service called Persona.
OpenAI stated that the erotica-friendly mode will not be activated unless a user specifically requests it. This approach aligns with comments Altman made in 2025, in which he stated, “You won’t get it unless you ask for it.” The company has not announced a timeline for the feature’s public release.
The report originates from Android Authority, which analyzed the app update code. The publication’s parent company, Ziff Davis, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025 alleging copyright infringement. Ziff Davis is the parent company of PCMag.
