OpenAI Adds Interactive Visuals to ChatGPT for Science

OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with dynamic visual explanations for math and science concepts, enhancing their understanding through real-time adjustments and updates.

The dynamic visual explanations launched on Tuesday enable users to adjust variables and see immediate updates. For instance, users can change triangle side lengths in the Pythagorean theorem to watch the hypotenuse change. This interactive feature is triggered by asking questions like “What is a lens equation?” or “How can I find the area of a circle?”

This latest development shifts ChatGPT’s role from simply delivering answers to encouraging direct engagement with underlying concepts. The change is particularly significant given that over 140 million people use ChatGPT weekly for help with math and science, according to OpenAI. Currently, the feature covers over 70 topics, including binomial square, Charles’ law, compound interest, and Ohm’s law.

OpenAI plans to expand this feature to include more interactive topics in the future. The visuals are available to all logged-in ChatGPT users, complementing other recent educational tools such as study mode and QuizGPT.

The introduction of interactive diagrams and visuals is not unique to OpenAI; Google’s Gemini launched its own version in November. The market for AI educational tools remains competitive as companies continue to roll out similar features.

OpenAI has specified that the visuals cover a range of topics including the area of a circle, Coulomb’s law, difference of squares, exponential decay, Hooke’s law, kinetic energy, and linear equations.
