This guide will show you how to open the Command Prompt using only your keyboard on Windows 11, 10, and 8, a useful skill if your mouse is not working or you prefer keyboard shortcuts.

Before you start, ensure you have a functional keyboard. You can launch Command Prompt with or without Administrator privileges using several keyboard shortcuts.

One method is using the Windows key + R to open the Run menu. Press the Windows key + R simultaneously to open the Run window, then type “cmd” into the Run window, and press Enter to open a regular Command Prompt window. To open with Administrator privileges, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), use the arrow keys to highlight “Yes” and then press Enter to allow access.

Alternatively, you can use the Windows key to search for Command Prompt. Press the Windows key to open the Search menu, type “cmd” into the search bar, and Command Prompt should appear as the top result. Press Enter to open a regular Command Prompt window or Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open with Administrator privileges. If prompted by UAC, use the arrow keys to highlight “Yes” and then press Enter.

Another method involves using Windows key + X to open the Power User menu. Press Windows key + X simultaneously, then select Command Prompt from the menu using the arrow keys. Note that on newer versions of Windows 10 and 11, Command Prompt might be replaced by Windows PowerShell. If so, select “Run” and follow the steps described in the “Using Windows Key + R” method. Press Enter to open a regular Command Prompt window.

Mastering these keyboard shortcuts can significantly speed up your workflow and provide a quick alternative if your mouse encounters issues. Knowing multiple ways to access Command Prompt using only your keyboard is a valuable skill for any Windows user, enhancing efficiency and providing a crucial workaround when needed.

This capability ensures that you can always perform system diagnostics, run scripts, or execute commands vital for troubleshooting and system maintenance, making it indispensable for IT professionals, advanced users, and anyone looking to optimize their interaction with Windows.
