Netflix has expanded its gaming offerings by releasing a mobile version of the popular game Red Dead Redemption for iOS and Android subscribers, marking its first official availability on these platforms.
The game, available for download by Netflix subscribers, features controls optimized for mobile devices, including touch-screen shooting and navigation. However, it requires an internet connection to play and does not include a multiplayer mode.
Originally released by Rockstar Games in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is set in 1911 during the Wild West era. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw on a mission to rescue his kidnapped family. Notably, the mobile version includes the “Undead Nightmare” expansion pack, where Marston encounters a zombie outbreak.
This release is a significant part of Netflix’s strategy to grow its gaming segment. Despite initial challenges, with less than 1% of its subscriber base engaging with available games, Netflix has seen a substantial increase in downloads, with estimates showing a 180% year-over-year growth in 2024.
Red Dead Redemption is one of Rockstar’s most beloved franchises, ranking second only to the Grand Theft Auto series. The mobile release is expected to renew interest in the franchise.
This launch follows Netflix’s introduction of games on smart TVs in October, which allows subscribers to use their phones as controllers for party games like Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, and Pictionary.
The rollout also comes two years after Netflix added Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy to its mobile game catalog. Interestingly, GTA: San Andreas will be departing from Netflix Games on December 12, marking its last day of availability for subscribers.
