Netflix streaming just got a whole lot better on Samsung TVs: HDR10+ codec support is rolling out. Following Netflix’s addition of HDR10+ support last week, Samsung confirmed the feature will now be accessible on its large screens.
HDR10+ content on Netflix will be available on 2024 and 2025 Samsung Neo QLED, OLED, and Lifestyle TV models, as well as 2024 and 2025 PC monitors, including the Smart Monitor M7, M8, and M9 series. Samsung plans to extend compatibility to older models in the future, though a timeline has not been specified.
Netflix has traditionally supported Dolby Vision, another dynamic metadata HDR codec. Content suited for Dolby Vision would previously downgrade to the inferior HDR10 on Samsung devices. HDR10+ adapts to changes in exposure levels in the video separately for each frame, unlike HDR10 which applies an averaging treatment based on the entire video.
Netflix’s HDR10+ support allows playback on screens that support HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision, a victory for Samsung, which co-owns the HDR10+ protocol and earns royalties from its use. This support is already available on Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones with compatible displays since last week’s Android update.
