New data from Nielsen reveals that Netflix’s original content is facing increased competition from rival streaming services, with its share of top ten charts dropping from 80% in 2021 to 52% this year.
The data, compiled by the Entertainment Strategy Guy newsletter, analyzed Nielsen’s Top Ten Streaming Originals in the US from 2021 to the present, highlighting a significant 28% decline in Netflix’s dominance. This downtrend suggests that other streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Apple TV Plus, and Paramount Plus, are gaining ground.
The analysis indicates a clear shift in the streaming landscape, with Netflix’s previous strong hold on original content viewership being challenged. While the trend isn’t always smooth, it consistently shows other streamers gaining traction, resulting in a more competitive environment.
