The first gameplay trailer for NBA 2K26 has been released, showcasing new features and improvements to the popular basketball simulation game, with a primary focus on overhauling player movement.

A primary focus of this year’s edition is an overhaul of player movement, with the introduction of a new motion engine powered by ProPLAY. According to 2K, this marks the first significant update to player movement since NBA 2K21. The new motion engine utilizes machine-learning technology on Gen 9 consoles to achieve more precise and lifelike movement. A key aim is to eliminate the “skating” effect seen in previous games by dynamically adjusting the positioning of players’ legs and feet. This should ensure that players launch, plant, and cut more realistically.

The ProPLAY motion engine works in tandem with other systems to improve the overall feel of the game, aiming for a “fresh and authentic feeling” while playing. 2K promises that this approach will improve various aspects of gameplay. NBA 2K26 also introduces Enhanced Rhythm Shooting, designed to deliver a more authentic shooting experience. According to 2K, “This shooting control method still relies on a DOWN-UP flicking motion with the shot stick, but now your Shot Timing and Tempo will actually manipulate the shooter’s upper body and impact how the shot looks throughout the complete motion by reflecting how you move the shot stick.”

Artificial intelligence has also been enhanced across coaching, offense, and defense. 2K states that, “Enhanced AI adapts strategically to a player’s every move on both sides of the ball.” A new intelligence module enables offensive AI to actively seek scoring opportunities through drive-and-kick plays to generate offense outside of standard plays. Defensive improvements include enhanced double team defensive logic and improved AI defenders logic.

Further enhancements incorporate expanded playbooks, AI difficulty improvements, and AI Shot Timing Ability in Play Now and MyNBA. This new feature will allow players to adjust how skilled AIs are at timing jump shots and layups separately. This should offer more customization for the single-player experience.

NBA 2K26 is scheduled for release on September 6. Players with early access will be able to play the game up to seven days early, starting on August 29. Reactions to the gameplay trailer have varied, as players are eager to experience the changes firsthand and determine if they live up to the promises made by Visual Concepts.
