Mute iMessage Conversations with Hide Alerts Feature

With the “Hide Alerts” feature, you can mute notifications for a single conversation in iMessage, allowing you to silence notifications from someone in Messages for both single-person and group chats without them being notified.

You can quickly turn this setting on or off for any chat by following these instructions directly within the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad.

To enable Hide Alerts using the swipe gesture, open the Messages app, which has a white speech bubble icon with a green bubble inside. Find the desired conversation in your list and swipe towards the left on it to reveal more settings. Tap the bell icon with a slash through it to enable Hide Alerts. A small, greyed-out bell icon with a slash will now appear next to the conversation time to indicate it is silenced. To disable Hide Alerts, simply swipe left on the conversation again and tap the plain bell icon that appears.

Alternatively, you can enable Hide Alerts using the conversation settings. If you have trouble swiping, first open the Messages app and tap on the conversation you wish to mute. Tap the contact’s name or group icons at the very top of the screen to open the details page. Find the Hide Alerts switch and toggle it to the ON position. Tap the Done button in the top-right corner to save your change and return to the conversation.

If you encounter issues with Hide Alerts, try troubleshooting common problems. If Hide Alerts isn’t working, try performing a full restart of your iPhone or iPad. If the option is missing or you cannot disable it, completely close the Messages app from the app switcher and reopen it. If Hide Alerts seems to turn on by itself, check your iCloud sync settings for Messages by opening the Settings app, tapping your name at the top, selecting iCloud, and then tapping Show All under Apps Using iCloud. Select Messages in iCloud to see if this setting is enabled, as muting a conversation on one device will sync that preference to your other Apple devices if it is.

This feature is especially useful for very active group chats where you want to stay in the loop but don’t need a notification for every single message. Using the Hide Alerts feature is a great way to take control of your digital environment and reduce distractions. Unlike leaving a group chat or blocking a contact, it allows you to stay connected and review messages on your own terms without being constantly interrupted by sounds or lock screen notifications.

This selective muting helps you maintain focus on important tasks while still being part of the conversation. It’s a subtle but powerful tool for managing digital noise, striking a balance between being reachable and being in control of your attention throughout the day.
