Mistral, a French AI startup, has launched Mistral Forge, a platform that enables enterprises to create custom AI models tailored to their specific data needs, addressing the limitations of existing AI models trained on general internet data.

The enterprise AI sector has seen many projects stall due to the disconnect between AI models and business-specific demands, despite having the necessary technology. Mistral’s focus on corporate solutions differentiates it from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have primarily targeted consumer markets. The company is expected to exceed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue this year, indicating strong momentum in its strategy.

Mistral Forge allows enterprises and governmental organizations to train AI models from scratch, potentially enhancing performance on non-English data and addressing domain-specific challenges. According to Elisa Salamanca, Mistral’s head of product, CEO Arthur Mensch emphasized that “What Forge does is it lets enterprises and governments customize AI models for their specific needs.”

Unlike many companies that claim to offer similar functionality but only fine-tune pre-existing models, Mistral Forge enables companies to fully retrain models on their own datasets. This promotes greater autonomy over AI systems and reduces dependency on third-party model providers, as the traditional method of fine-tuning limits adaptability and efficiency.

Customers of Mistral Forge have access to a library of open-weight AI models, including the newly released Mistral Small 4. Timothée Lacroix, Mistral’s co-founder, noted that customization allows customers to focus on specific topics of importance, thereby enhancing model effectiveness.

Mistral provides recommendations on model selection and infrastructure but leaves the final decision-making to clients. To assist in the implementation process, the company’s forward-deployed engineers offer direct support, guiding companies in managing their data and model adaptations, a strategy also used by industry leaders like IBM and Palantir.

Mistral has partnered with several organizations, including Ericsson and the European Space Agency. Early adopters of the Forge platform include ASML, which led Mistral’s Series C funding round at a €11.7 billion valuation. Expected use cases for Forge include tailoring AI models for governmental languages, ensuring financial compliance, and enabling manufacturers to customize solutions for specific requirements.
