Microsoft has stopped selling and renting new movies and TV content as of July 18th, as stated in the updated FAQs on both Xbox and Windows platforms, affecting customers’ ability to purchase or rent new content.
Although new purchases are no longer an option, customers who have previously bought or rented content can still access it on their Windows and Xbox devices. Microsoft confirmed that existing customers can continue to access their previously purchased content on these devices. The company also assured that players can continue to play personal videos on Xbox devices and that Windows customers will retain access to playback and download functionality for their existing content.
Microsoft’s decision is in line with similar moves made by Apple and Google in the past. However, it does not include provisions for refunds or transferring content to other services, as per the company’s terms of sale. For users looking for new entertainment options, Microsoft recommends exploring alternative services that offer the latest releases, such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, among others.
This latest development is part of a larger restructuring effort at Microsoft, following the company’s recent announcement of significant layoffs affecting around 9,000 employees across its business, including major cuts within its gaming division earlier this month.
