Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has revealed the company’s plans to develop its own frontier-grade foundation models, potentially putting it in direct competition with OpenAI.
Suleyman emphasized that building at the frontier requires massive, reliable infrastructure and world-class research teams. He outlined the next wave of products around autonomous agents capable of handling complex work. Suleyman also highlighted healthcare as a priority area, expressing an ambition to pursue “medical super-intelligence” alongside general-purpose models.
This strategic shift occurs as Big Tech companies assess the cost of leading-edge AI, with compute becoming a significant constraint for model development. It underscores that Microsoft’s AI strategy extends beyond its partnership with a single lab, even as it continues to integrate AI features across Windows and Microsoft 365.
