Meta Developing New VR Headset with Exclusive Content

Meta is in discussions with major content providers, including Disney and A24, to secure exclusive streaming content for a forthcoming virtual reality headset, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

The device, codenamed “Loma,” is described as a glasses-like headset featuring an external compute unit designed to be carried separately, such as in a pocket. Meta is pursuing both new and existing licensed content for exclusive or timed-exclusive availability on its VR platform.

The description of the “Loma” headset with a tethered compute unit resembles previous rumors about a Meta headset codenamed “Puffin.” Puffin was described as a lightweight, open-periphery headset with a tethered compute puck, suggesting Loma could be the same device or a related prototype.

Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, Meta’s head of VR, has stated that the company constantly develops various prototypes, many of which do not reach public release. Following the WSJ report, Bosworth reposted a prior statement emphasizing that “stories based on chatter about one individual decision will never give the real picture.” This suggests Loma or Puffin may be among these prototypes.

Sources cited by The Wall Street Journal indicate that Meta anticipates pricing the “Loma” headset above the starting price of a Quest headset (currently $300) but below the base price of Apple’s Vision Pro ($3,500).
