“Learning to Learn” Key Skill for AI Future

In a captivating address at an ancient Roman theater beneath the Acropolis in Athens, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google’s DeepMind and a 2024 Nobel laureate, declared that “learning how to learn” will emerge as the paramount skill for the next generation amid the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on education and the workplace.

Speaking on Friday, Hassabis, a neuroscientist and former chess prodigy, highlighted the accelerating pace of technological evolution driven by AI. “It’s very hard to predict the future, like 10 years from now, in normal cases. It’s even harder today, given how fast AI is changing, even week by week,” he told the audience. He stressed that while the specifics remain elusive, “the only thing you can say for certain is that huge change is coming.”

Hassabis forecasted the potential arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI)—machines capable of human-like versatility—within the next decade. This milestone, he explained, could usher in “radical abundance” through groundbreaking advancements, though it carries inherent risks that must be managed. To navigate this era, he advocated for the cultivation of “meta-skills,” including strategies for efficient learning and adapting to novel subjects, in tandem with foundational knowledge in mathematics, science, and the humanities.

“One thing we’ll know for sure is you’re going to have to continually learn … throughout your career,” Hassabis emphasized, underscoring the necessity of lifelong education in a dynamic job market.

The event also featured Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who engaged in discussions with Hassabis on integrating AI into public sector services. Mitsotakis cautioned against the unchecked expansion of major tech firms, warning it could exacerbate global financial disparities. “Unless people actually see benefits, personal benefits, to this (AI) revolution, they will tend to become very skeptical,” he said. “And if they see … obscene wealth being created within very few companies, this is a recipe for significant social unrest.”

Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in London in 2010—subsequently acquired by Google in 2014—earned international acclaim this year by sharing the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AI-driven innovations in protein structure prediction, revolutionizing fields like medicine and drug development. His paternal heritage as Greek Cypriot added a personal touch to the gathering.

Mitsotakis expressed gratitude to Hassabis for rescheduling the presentation to sidestep a conflict with Greece’s European basketball championship semifinal against Turkey, which the host nation ultimately lost 94-68.

This dialogue in Athens underscores the global imperative to harness AI’s potential equitably, balancing innovation with societal safeguards as the technology redefines human endeavor.
