iOS 26 Introduces “Keep Audio with Headphones” Feature

iOS 26 introduces a significant new feature, “Keep Audio with Headphones,” designed to prevent AirPods audio from automatically switching to other Bluetooth speakers, addressing a long-standing user frustration.

This new feature tackles the issue where iPhones would unexpectedly redirect audio output to connected Bluetooth devices, particularly in-car systems, without user intervention. Previously, users frequently experienced scenarios where audio playing through their AirPods would abruptly blast through other Bluetooth speakers upon connection.

With iOS 26, Apple offers a solution to this auto-switching behavior, giving users more control over their iPhone’s audio stream. While the feature is off by default, it can be easily enabled through the device’s settings. To activate “Keep Audio with Headphones,” users need to navigate to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity, and then toggle on the new option.

Apple describes the feature as designed to “keep audio with headphones when other devices like speakers or cars connect to iPhone.” This enhancement is expected to be widely appreciated by users who prefer their audio to remain private unless explicitly redirected. The introduction of this setting may also complement other new functionalities, such as automatic CarPlay switching.

Regardless of the specific motivation, “Keep Audio with Headphones” empowers users to dictate how their iPhone interacts with nearby devices, including cars, Macs, HomePods, and various Bluetooth speakers.
