Apple’s Memoji system allows users to create and use personalized avatars on their iPhone or iPad, enhancing their messaging and FaceTime experiences with customizable characters that mirror their expressions.

To get started with Memoji, users need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 13 or later. For animated Memoji or FaceTime effects, a device with Face ID is required. The process involves several methods, including creating a Memoji, sending Memoji stickers, sending animated Memoji messages, using Memoji in FaceTime, and changing the contact photo.

Creating a Memoji involves opening a conversation in the Messages app, tapping the + button to the left of the text field, selecting More, and then choosing Memoji. Users then tap + New Memoji and customize their Memoji by adjusting various features such as skin tone, hairstyle, and clothing. The live preview updates with each change, allowing users to see their Memoji come to life. Once satisfied, users tap Done in the top-right corner to save their Memoji.

Sending Memoji stickers is another way to use Memoji in conversations. Users open a conversation in the Messages app, tap the + button next to the text field, select Stickers, and then open the Memoji tab. They can choose a Memoji and scroll through the available stickers to send one.

For a more interactive experience, users can send animated Memoji messages. This involves opening a conversation, tapping the + button, selecting More, and then Memoji. Users select their Memoji, tap the record button, and speak; the Memoji mirrors their facial movements. The recording can be up to 30 seconds long, and users can redo the recording by tapping the trashcan icon.

Memoji can also be used during FaceTime calls. Users start a FaceTime call with the camera on, tap the Effects button, and select the desired Memoji from the top of the list. The Memoji appears instantly and tracks the user’s face and body movements. To remove it, users tap Effects again and select the Memoji.

Furthermore, users can change their contact photo to a Memoji. This is done by opening the Contacts app, tapping My Card, and then Edit. Users select Edit beneath their profile picture, choose Customize, and then Contact Photo. They can then select Memoji, pick a pose, adjust the position and scale, and tap Next followed by Choose to apply the Memoji as their contact photo.

A pro tip for Memoji users is to save their favorite Memoji poses in the Memoji app for quick access. This allows for a more personalized and consistent experience across different Apple services.

Users are encouraged to explore different Memoji styles and experiment with custom accessories to make their avatar truly unique. They can share their creations with friends by sending stickers or animated messages and consider using their new Memoji as a contact photo across all Apple services for a consistent personal brand.
