Leaving group texts on Android can be confusing due to the difference between RCS and SMS/MMS standards. This guide explains how to manage these chats using the Google Messages app.
Before managing group texts, ensure you have the Google Messages app installed on your Android device. If you are using Samsung Messages, switch to Google Messages for full RCS support, as Samsung Messages has limited capabilities.
Deleting a group text conversation does not stop new messages from appearing. If the group is SMS-based, you cannot permanently remove yourself from the chat, and you will continue to receive messages unless you mute notifications or block the numbers.
To manage group conversations, different methods are used based on the messaging protocol. For an RCS group text, open Google Messages, tap the group chat, tap the ⋮ icon, select Group details, and then tap Leave group. Confirm by tapping OK.
If you want to delete a group text, open Google Messages, locate the group conversation, tap the ⋮ button, and select Delete. Tap Delete again to confirm. Note that this only removes the chat history; new messages will still come through.
To mute a group text, open Google Messages, tap the group chat, tap the ⋮ button, select Group details, tap Notifications, and select Silent. This stops the chat from alerting you.
For WhatsApp users, to leave a group, open WhatsApp, tap the group chat, tap the group name, scroll down, and tap Exit Group. Confirm by tapping Exit.
A useful tip is that if you are stuck in an SMS group chat that you cannot leave, mute the notifications and then delete the conversation thread to prevent the chat from reappearing.
After managing group texts, review your messaging app settings to ensure you are using the best protocol. For Android devices, using Google Messages is recommended for the full RCS experience, including features like typing indicators and the ability to leave groups.
If you frequently deal with unwanted group messages, consider blocking specific numbers or adjusting your notification settings globally within your device’s system settings to maintain a cleaner messaging inbox.
