How to Check if Messages are Read on iPhone

This guide explains how to see if someone has read your text message on an iPhone or iPad, covering the specific indicators and settings for iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.

Before proceeding, ensure you have an iPhone or iPad and the respective messaging apps (iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger) installed and updated.

To determine the read status of your messages across different platforms, follow these steps. Using iMessage requires verifying that the recipient also uses iMessage; outgoing messages should be blue. Green messages indicate a non-iMessage user, such as an Android user, and read receipts are not supported. Additionally, group messages do not support read receipts.

To enable read receipts on iMessage, open your iPhone’s Settings, scroll down and tap Messages, then slide the Send Read Receipts switch to the On (green) position. Both you and the recipient must have this enabled to see each other’s read receipts. It is also necessary to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or mobile data, as iMessages require an active connection.

Open the Messages app, which is a green and white chat bubble icon. Write or reply to a message, ensuring you see “iMessage” in the typing area. Send the message; you will see “Delivered” below the message once it has been successfully sent. Wait for a read receipt; if the recipient has read receipts on, you will see “Read” below the message with a timestamp.

For WhatsApp, read receipts are automatically enabled by default. Open the WhatsApp app on your iPhone or iPad; it’s a green and white chat bubble icon. Create or reply to an existing message, then tap the Send button (round blue icon with a white paper airplane). Observe the check marks at the bottom-right corner of the sent message: a single gray check mark means the message has been sent but not yet delivered, two gray check marks mean the message has been delivered but not yet read, and two blue check marks indicate that the recipient has read your message.

On Facebook Messenger, the app automatically shows when someone has read your message. Open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad; it’s a blue and white chat bubble icon. Tap the person you want to message to open a conversation, type your message, and tap the Send button (blue paper airplane icon). Check the message status indicator: a blue check mark in a white circle means the message has been sent but not opened, a white check mark in a blue circle means the recipient has opened Messenger but not read the message, and when the recipient’s profile picture appears in a tiny circle below the message, it has been read.

A pro tip is to consider privacy settings while using read receipts, as some users intentionally disable them. Their absence doesn’t necessarily mean your message hasn’t been seen.

Understanding read receipts across different messaging platforms is crucial for effective communication, allowing you to gauge whether your messages have been delivered and acknowledged by the recipient. This knowledge helps manage expectations in personal and professional interactions, reducing uncertainty about message reception.

Knowing the status of your messages can enhance your digital etiquette. For instance, if you see a message has been read, you might expect a quicker response, or understand that a delayed reply is not due to the message being unseen, making your messaging experience more transparent and informative.
