Google has launched Firebase Studio, a generative AI-powered platform that enables users to create custom apps in minutes directly from a web browser, marking a significant development in the app-building space.

Firebase Studio is a full-stack AI workspace that combines Google’s Genkit and Project IDX with AI agents powered by Gemini. The platform allows users to build, launch, iterate, and monitor mobile and web apps, APIs, backends, and frontends within the platform. It is currently available in preview to all users with a Google account.

Users can import code from existing repositories like GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket, or from a local machine. The platform supports a range of languages, including Java, .NET, Node.js, Go, and Python, and frameworks like Next.js, React, Angular, Vue.js, Android, and Flutter. This flexibility makes it accessible to a broad range of developers.

Firebase Studio offers more than 60 pre-built templates to help users get started. Alternatively, users can utilize a prototyping agent to design apps using natural language, screenshots, mockups, and drawing tools, all without the need for coding. The designed app can then be directly deployed to Firebase App Hosting, Cloud Run, or custom infrastructure, streamlining the development process.

The platform allows for app monitoring in the Firebase console and refinement in a coding workspace with a single click. Apps can be previewed in a browser, and Firebase Studio features built-in runtime services and tools for emulation, testing, refactoring, debugging, and code documentation. These capabilities simplify the development workflow and enhance productivity.

Gemini plays a crucial role in Firebase Studio by assisting with various coding tasks. It helps users write code and documentation, fix bugs, manage and resolve dependencies, write and run unit tests, and work with Docker containers. This assistance enables users to customize and evolve different aspects of their apps, including model inference, agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), UX, business logic, and more.

For users in the Google Developer Program, early access to Gemini Code Assist agents is being granted. These agents offer advanced features such as code migration, testing simulations, and code documentation. For example, a migration agent can help move code, a testing agent can simulate user interactions or run adversarial scenarios against AI models to identify and fix potentially dangerous outputs, and a code documentation agent allows users to interact with their code.

During the preview, Firebase Studio is available with three workspaces for regular users, while Google Developer Program members can access up to 30 workspaces. Gemini Code Assist agents are available on a waitlist basis, indicating a phased rollout of advanced features.
