Google has introduced a new agent in its Opal app that enables users to create automated workflows using text prompts, allowing for the development of mini-apps that execute tasks without manual intervention.
The feature utilizes the Gemini 3 Flash model to automatically select the necessary tools for execution, thereby streamlining the process. The agent can leverage Google Sheets to maintain memory across different sessions. For instance, it can preserve a shopping list for an e-commerce application, ensuring continuity and efficiency.
These agents are designed to be natively interactive, capable of requesting additional information from users or presenting choices to determine the next steps when required. According to Google, this functionality empowers non-technical users to construct complex workflows within their applications, thereby enhancing user experience and productivity.
Opal was initially launched for users in the United States in July 2025. The tool was subsequently expanded to 15 additional countries, including Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, and Singapore, in October 2025. By November 2025, Opal’s availability had further expanded to over 160 countries, marking a significant milestone in its global rollout. In December 2025, Google integrated Opal into the Gemini web app, introducing a visual editor that eliminates the need for coding knowledge.
The introduction of this new agent positions Google among competitors such as Lovable and Replit, which are also operating in this space. Other startups that are gaining prominence include Wabi, founded by the former Replika founder, Emergent backed by SoftBank and Lightspeed, and Rocket.new, which is backed by Accel.
