Google has enhanced its Translate app by integrating Gemini to provide alternative translations for idioms and colloquialisms, improving cross-language communication clarity.
The latest update to the Google Translate app now offers users alternatives for idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms by leveraging Gemini. This enhancement is designed to mitigate confusion that often arises when translating phrases that do not have direct equivalents between languages. The update is currently available for both Android and iOS users in the United States and India.
When users encounter an idiom or colloquialism, they can tap an arrow icon to view alternative phrases. These alternatives come with explanations on when and why a particular expression should be used, thereby providing specific guidance on phrase usage. This feature is particularly useful for idioms that may not translate directly between languages, helping to ensure that the intended meaning is conveyed accurately.
In addition to the alternative phrases, Google has introduced two new buttons to facilitate deeper interaction with the translations. The “Understand” button offers a detailed overview of the translation, addressing any questions users may have. The “Ask” button enables users to pose follow-up questions to gather more information, further enhancing the app’s utility.
According to Google, this enhanced experience will soon be available on the web, although the company has not disclosed any plans to expand this feature to other countries beyond the United States and India.
Google Translate is a widely used, free translation service that supports over 100 languages. The app is owned by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, which is listed on the stock exchange under the ticker symbol GOOGL.
