Google is set to launch a preview version of its AI health coach for select Fitbit Premium users in the United States tomorrow, initially targeting Android devices with an iOS version to follow later.
This public preview serves as a beta release, enabling Google to gather user feedback to inform the addition, modification, or improvement of features and capabilities. The company acknowledges that the new experience will have some gaps at launch.
The AI health coach functions as a chatbot designed to assist users in setting and achieving their fitness and health goals. Google characterizes it as secure, personalized, and grounded in science. The process begins with a five-to-ten minute conversation to assess the user’s health and fitness objectives.
The coach assumes multiple roles, acting as both a sounding board for personal health, fitness, and sleep goals, and as a personal trainer. It allows users to review and adjust their fitness plans, track their progress, receive trend advice, and generate workouts. For instance, the chatbot can create customized exercises tailored to specific constraints, such as a limited space in a hotel room.
Additional features of the AI health coach include brainstorming questions for doctors and tracking and analyzing sleep metrics. The coach provides detailed sleep analysis, identifying patterns and trends that impact sleep quality. All data generated through interactions with the coach remains accessible within the Fitbit app.
The preview will not be available to all users immediately. Eligible Fitbit Premium subscribers will receive in-app notifications when the software is ready for them. The feature is compatible with any Pixel Watch or Fitbit device.
Google is currently redesigning the Fitbit app to emphasize AI integration, positioning the health coach as a central component that will be woven throughout the app’s various functions.
